Bearkat Bites: That Was NOT "Pate State Material"
And at least ONE CUSA team is having their spring game this year.
Note: Thank you for subscribing to Bearkats Newsletter. This space is free and always will be. We do, however, ask that you consider a donation to $FobbsDistro on our Cashapp. These donations go the gas, food, and travel expenses that go with covering this incredible program. There is no “suggested donor level” or any of that, but, obviously, the more that is donated, the more places we can travel, with the goal being to attend every Sam Houston home and away game in 2025. Thank you, and Eat ‘Em Up ‘Kats!
Misplaced Pate
As college football fans know, there has been a surge in podcasts and online shows covering the sport. These hosts claim to be all-knowers of all things football, complete with “models” to back up their claims. Josh Pate is one such podcaster. While his show was well-meaning during its infancy, it has since morphed into the sort of “I-know-more-than-you-so-worship-me” act you see across the internet today.
This week, Pate went on rant about the fact that so many spring games were getting canceled. I agree with his starting point, by the way. These programs (who get upset when fans don’t cheer the right way) beg for attention and support while constantly limiting access. Where I break with Pate is his idea to have larger schools like Texas play smaller schools. Pate’s example included “(having Texas play an FCS team like Sam Houston)”.
Beyond the fact that Sam Houston has not been in FCS for a few seasons now, Pate’s notion highlights the ways in which national media not only disregards smaller programs, but openly detests them. It’s one thing to not know, but quite another to put down small programs. To be fair, the outspoken commentator did apologize.
In this internet age where if you’re not “trending” or have thousands and thousands of “views” you don’t exist, I want readers here to know we will continue to cover Sam Houston as we always have; with accurate information, intelligent commentary, and a dignity the program deserves. The only controversy you will see here isPLAY STEPHEN F. AUSTIN IN FOOTBALL GAAAAAAAA!!!!!
CUSA At The Combine
While there will undoubtably be a few guys from Conference USA on some NFL rosters this spring and into the season, there is not much CUSA representation at this year’s NFL combine.
The lone invitees are Jacksonville(ALABAMA) State offensive lineman Clay Webb and Western Kentucky defensive back Upton Stout. Webb was the left guard for a Jax St. team that punished Sam Houston with 278 rushing yards while giving up just one sack on their way to a 21-11 win over the Bearkats.
Stout, meanwhile, deflected a pass and added six tackers has his WKU Hilltoppers beat Sam Houston 31-14. Stout is also a native of the Houston area, playing his high school ball on the city’s east side at North Shore.
Liberty Football Sets Spring Game Date
As the debate about should they or shouldn’t they as far as spring game are concerned, Liberty football has chosen their side. The Flames will have their scrimmage this Saturday, March 1, at their home of Williams Stadium. The somewhat late notice about the game suggests they were maybe pressured from the outside to host it?
Programming note, this is our last Bearkat Bites until March 27, as I take time away with my new bride for our wedding on March 10. Thank you all for supporting, be sure to tell someone if you love my work, and send your well wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Fobbs!
