When Hawaii football paid Sam Houston a visit back in September, many saw a team working through its limited resources to field a solid enough squad and maybe sneak into a bowl. Despite the Bearkats 31-13 win over the Rainbow Warriors, the visitors left Huntsville with an okay feeling.
That season, once so full of hope, took a major detour this week, when Hawaii announced the firing of athletic director Craig Angelos.
An outsider to the islands from Long Island, Angelos had only been on the job 18 months, but maximized his time there, pushing for international games in Japan, making Hawaii a full Mountain West Conference member, and freeing the Warriors from having to pay travel subsidies when their conference mates came to town.
While these things should equal peace in paradise, the Hawaii leadership never quite cared for Angelos, preferring a leader who from the islands. That the outgoing school president fired him is even more telling.
Hawaii is out of bowl competition as things sit today. Sam Houston will visit Hawaii September 6th of 2025, part of a new era of Rainbow Warrior leadership.
